Unconventional Fanwork Exchange Letter
May. 20th, 2020 08:30 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Hi there! Thank you so much for signing up to make something for me! I had a great time with this exchange last year, and I'm really excited to do it again.
If you already have an idea of what you want to write, feel free to ignore everything in this letter and go for it. I have broad tastes and I'm pretty easy to please.
If you'd like prompts, I've rambled a little about what I like about each fandom, and then what I like about each freeform tag. Hopefully there's something in one or both of those sections that will spark an idea. Don't feel that you need to use all the characters I've requested; some of the freeforms need an ensemble cast to work, while others make more sense focused on one character.

Quiz (Which Ship Should You Check Out?)
Permanent death of requested characters – It's fine to kill off the characters temporarily so that, for example, Character A can make a deal with the devil to bring back Character B, or go down into the underworld to get them. It's also fine to kill them off at the start of the story and then have the whole fic set in the afterlife. It's fine to mention the deaths of unrequested characters.
What I'm basically DNWing here is a sobfest full of grief and mourning and separating people who love each other. You're welcome to hurt my faves as much as you like, but please fix them afterwards. Thank you!
Kidfic – It's fine if the characters have kids, I just prefer it not to be the focus of the story.
Sickfic – I don't enjoy stories where the character spends the whole day in bed with the flu or a stomach bug, because I start to get phantom symptoms. Injuries from fights and so on are fine. Old injuries or disabilities flaring up are fine. Plots where people are contracting a mysterious virus and Our Heroes have to investigate are fine.
Graphic details of pregnancy – I'm happy to receive stories about pregnancy or mpreg, but I would prefer not to read a lot of medical details. I also find the idea of the baby kicking from the inside a bit squicky.
AU scenarios that don't interest me – Coffee Shop AUs, High School or College AUs, Royalty AUs, Non-Magical AUs (for magical canons).
Food used during sex – Like licking chocolate sauce off each other and stuff? For some reason I find it kind of squicky, and my brain halts all the sexy times to go, 'Oh no, they'll never get that out of the sheets'.
Domdrop/Subdrop – My experience with this does not seem to align with most of fandom's, and it can knock me out of a story. It's fine to mention it, but I'd prefer you didn't make it the focus of the fic. Aftercare of all kinds is absolutely fine.
Some other things that don't do it for me: Scat, Spitballing, Watersports. (You probably wouldn't have written any of these unrequested anyway.)
Characters: Rufus Drumknott, Havelock Vetinari, Samuel Vimes, Sybil Vimes
Ships: Rufus Drumknott/Havelock Vetinari, Sam Vimes/Sybil Vimes
Freeforms: Artwork/Doodles/Marginalia, Fake Trailer/Vid, Advice Column, Blind Item, Dating App Profile, Diary/Journal Entry/Notes, Folktale/Prophecies, Travel Guide/Travel Writing, 20 Random Facts, Choose Your Own Adventure, Non-Linear Narrative, Poetry (Ghazal, Rondeau, Sonnet, Villanelle), Rashomon-style Conflicting Narratives
Vetinari is my fave forever and watching him scheming from the Oblong Office always gives me joy, as does the way Drumknott (almost) manages to keep up with him. What do they do in their down time? Does Vetinari have piles of dog-care books by his bed? Does Drumknott have a huge model train collection? Do they play stealth chess or Cripple Mr Onion together?
Vimes and Sybil are also my faves and I would love to see Sybil helping Vimes solve crimes, or Vimes helping Sybil with the dragons. What are the like at home together? Does Sybil like to garden? Does Sam teach Young Sam to play football? Did they ever get a proper holiday that wasn't secretly a case?
Characters: Any or No Character
Freeforms: Fake Trailer/Vid, Folktale/Prophecies, Travel Guide/Travel Writing
Obviously, this request is all about the worldbuilding. I want you to fill in the gaps that we don't see in the book. What kind of myths and legends are lurking in Hogwarts Library? What other prophecies are stored in the Department of Mysteries? What is the wizarding world like in other countries?
I'm assuming you won't really need characters for the Folktale/Prophecies/Travel ones, but feel free to incorporate any characters from anywhere in the canon.
For the vids, I'm happy to see any group of characters. I love the main trio, but I'd also be intrigued by a vid about James and Lily's generation, one from the Slytherin POV, or one about the original Hogwarts founders. Use the Harry Potter film footage if you want to but there's no need if you have other ideas. Someone on tumblr suggested Shazad Latif as a young Severus Snape, and I am so here for this. Someone else suggested Shaun Evans for Remus Lupin, and I'm here for that, too. For the vids specifically, I am fine with a Non-Magical AU if you want to re-imagine the characters in some other setting.
Characters: Lyra Belacqua, Will Parry, Lord Asriel, Iorek Byrnison, Lee Scorseby
Ships: Lyra Belacqua/Will Parry, Iorek Byrnison/Lee Scoresby
Freeforms: Artwork/Doodles/Marginalia, Advice Column, Diary/Journal Entry/Notes, Folktale/Prophecies, Travel Guide/Travel Writing, 20 Random Facts, Choose Your Own Adventure, Non-Linear Narrative, Poetry (Ghazal, Rondeau, Sonnet, Villanelle), Rashomon-style Conflicting Narratives
I wouldn't say no to a fix-it of the canon ending for Lyra and Will - what would their lives be like if they could see each other? How would Pan and Kirjava get on? What would Will study at university? Alternatively, what did they do in the small amount of time they had together? How do they go about building their separate futures?
I wouldn't say no to a fix-it for Lee, either. I'm also intrigued by his long friendship/love affair with Iorek. What adventures/scrapes did they get into? How did Lee rescue Iorek from the Tartars? How did he react to learning that Iorek was a prince? Does Lee fly Iorek around Svalbard in the balloon?
I'd love to see more of Asriel's past, which must have been incredibly adventurous and dramatic. What was his relationship with the Gyptians like? What kind of experimental theology work did he do? What did he do after he had his assets stripped?
I'd also like to see more of Lyra's world, or any of the parallel universes, beyond what we get in the books. What was Cittàgazze like before the Spectres? What is there to explore in Lyra's version of Oxford, the Fens, Wittenberg, Constantinople, Tashbulak? How do the major cities of the world differ from our own? What kind of folktales or prophecies do these other cultures have?
I've read La Belle Sauvage and The Secret Commonwealth so if you want to include any details from either book then you won't spoil me.
Characters: Clint Barton, Kate Bishop, Phil Coulson, Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Natasha Romanov
Freeforms: Artwork/Doodles/Marginalia, Advice Column, Blind Item, Dating App Profile, Diary/Journal Entry/Notes, Skippy's List/Increasingly Specific Rules, Travel Guide/Travel Writing, Choose Your Own Adventure, Non-Linear Narrative, Poetry (Ghazal, Rondeau, Sonnet, Villanelle), Rashomon-style Conflicting Narratives, Fandom Primer
Marvel is such a massive sprawling fandom, and I only came to it recently, so I still feel a little out of my depth. I've read a few Hawkeye comics (mostly Fraction and Lemire, some Blindspot), Hawkeye & The Winter Soldier, some Secret Avengers, Battle Scars... I'm kind of in love with Hawkeye: Freefall at the moment; Rosenberg's sense of humour is my sense of humour, except better. But don't feel you have to stick to stuff I'm familiar with.
I would love to see more of Coulson and Fury's time in the Rangers and the disasters they solved, or caused, or both. It would also be really interesting to see them trying to adjust to life with SHIELD, or how Hill manages the motley crew she's been given. Clint and Kate make an awesome team and I love watching them kicking ass and taking names, but I also love it when they hang out at home and watch Dog Cops. The Secret Avengers missions were really fun and more casefic/missionfic/team shenanigans would be amazing.
Most of my requests are fairly gen, but I ship these characters in pretty much every combination, so feel free to throw in some Coulson/Fury, Clint/Coulson, Maria/Natasha, Clint/Natasha, or whatever you want.
Alternatively, I would love to see some worldbuilding. Where should I go drinking in Madripoor? Which festivals are worth seeing in Latveria? What are the most incredible museums in Wakanda?
Characters: Peter Grant, Sahra Guleed, Molly, Thomas Nightingale, Abdul Haqq Walid
Ships: Peter Grant/Thomas Nightingale
Freeforms: Artwork/Doodles/Marginalia, Fake Trailer/Vid, Advice Column, Blind Item, Dating App Profile, Diary/Journal Entry/Notes, Skippy's List/Increasingly Specific Rules, Folktale/Prophecies, 20 Random Facts, Choose Your Own Adventure, Non-Linear Narrative, Poetry (Ghazal, Rondeau, Sonnet, Villanelle), Rashomon-style Conflicting Narratives
Peter and Nightingale charmed me from the very beginning with the way they're so different and yet so willing to learn from each other. I will never stop being impressed at how much Nightingale has changed since meeting Peter, and it's pretty clear in the books that Peter has developed a bit of a crush on Nightingale.
Peter is my fave forever and I will listen to him ramble about magic, the scientific model, architecture, class, Latin, jazz or London with absolute glee. I'm fascinated by Nightingale's relationship to food, because he's embraced modern cuisine even though he doesn't seem to care about 99% of the modern world. Did he get a taste for international food on his travels?
I love the fact that Molly takes to modern technology like the proverbial duck, and I long to know more about her blog. Sahra's oriental swordfighting is incredible and I really want to know more about why her signare is 'ripping silk' and how she feels about being recruited into all this magical bollocks. Abdul's past in Scotland is so interesting to me, I would read any amount of stuff about his conversion to Islam and his thoughts about it.
Basically I love all the characters, please give me more.
I should mention that I'm only up to Lies Sleeping (sorry!), but I'm not remotely bothered about spoilers, so feel free to include whatever you want.
Characters: Sherlock Holmes, John Watson
Ships: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Freeforms: Artwork/Doodles/Marginalia, Advice Column, Blind Item, Diary/Journal Entry/Notes, 20 Random Facts, Choose Your Own Adventure, Non-Linear Narrative, Poetry (Ghazal, Rondeau, Sonnet, Villanelle)
Holmes and Watson are my two favourite idiots. This is either a love story for the ages or the world's most epic friendship. They live together and work together and socialize together and know everything about each other and somehow these two fairly different men manage to get along with barely a harsh word.
I love all casefic in this fandom - there's something so satisfying about watching them both set the world to rights. I'm fascianted by the extraordinary technological and social changes of the Victorian era, especially the scientific and medical stuff that Holmes and Watson must have an interest in. Mesmerism! Criminal psychology! Bizarre attitudes to homosexuality!
I always love hearing about Watson's intense loyalty ("It was worth a wound..."), Holmes secretly (or openly) admiring Watson's brilliance, criminals locking them up together, going to the theatre or opera, or pining over the breakfast table.
Freeforms: Quiz (Which Ship Should You Check Out?), Travel Guide/Travel Writing.
Let me assure you that I know what I'm getting into by requesting this, and I would be genuinely happy with any fandom. I like learning more about different fandoms even if I'm never going to get into them – I can watch them sailing past on my tumblr dash and go, hey, I know what that is! :D There's also a reasonably good chance you'll win me over to a new fandom.
For the quiz, feel free to use a bunch of different fandoms you like, or just do various pairings from the same fandom.
For the travel writing prompts, I don't have any strong preferences for what kind of canon you choose. I love fantasy and sci-fi and some kind of epic interplanetary outpost with spaceships or an elaborate magical kingdom would be fun, but I would be just as happy with a guide to a small town in Sussex. I really mean it when I say I'll travel anywhere.
Fandoms: Discworld – Terry Pratchett, His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman, Marvel (Comics), Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch, Sherlock Holmes – Arthur Conan Doyle.
I can imagine any of the characters I've nominated as a keen amateur artist, and I'd love to see what kind of things they note/sketch/save.
Fandoms: Discworld – Terry Pratchett, Harry Potter – JK Rowling, Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch.
I've requested three books for the vidding freeforms, because I'm awkward, and also because I love seeing new visual interpretations of books. For Discworld and Harry Potter, you're welcome to use the films/tv/etc if you want to, but I'd also love for you to use entirely new sources and cast anyone you want for the characters. If you're struggling for source material for RoL, did you know there's a really cool music video by Doc Brown that has some great visuals? But, again, please use whatever source or headcanons you like. I am all in favour of a racebent or genderbent version of all the characters except Peter Grant – please keep his canonical race.
Other than that, I don't really have any prompts, sorry! I always enjoy the POV of minor characters, and I always enjoy time shifts (Will and Lyra as adults, Snape and Lupin as kids, Nightingale in the 1930s, etc). I just want to see what you think the worlds might look like on screen, what our favourite characters are doing, what kind of trouble they might get themselves into.
Fandoms: Discworld – Terry Pratchett, His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman, Marvel (Comics), Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch, Sherlock Holmes – Arthur Conan Doyle.
I love the idea of multiple people writing in to the same poor beleaguered advice columnist with the same problem from opposite angles. "My colleague refuses to look before he leaps, how do I keep him alive?" "My colleague keeps trying to prevent me from doing my job, what is with him?
I also love the absurdity of seeing canon events laid out in real-world terms. "My boss is 120 years old and doesn't understand modern technology, what do I do?" "I'm having an argument with the other half of my soul and now he's not talking to me. Help." "The Anarchist's Guild have blown up half the city again, how do I persuade them to stop?"
If I've requested a ship, feel free to make this shippy! "I'm in love with my flatmate/colleague/boss, what do I do?" "My employee unexpectedly bought me roses, what does this mean?"
Fandoms: Discworld – Terry Pratchett, Marvel (Comics), Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch, Sherlock Holmes – Arthur Conan Doyle.
I love blind items but 99% of the time I couldn't begin to guess which celebrities they're talking about. But fictional characters are a whole other matter! So who's being gossiped about?
Fandoms: Discworld – Terry Pratchett, Marvel (Comics), Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch.
Honestly, this just seems like it would be hilarious. Fury takes it upon himself to write a dating profile for Coulson, Carrot tries to advertise himself in the Ankh-Morpork Times, Molly horrifies everyone in the Folly by being amazing at online dating.
"About me", "interests" and "what I'm looking for" are obvious, but I also like profiles that have the silly "One thing I can't live without", "My weirdest quirk" and "Message me if" sections in them. Totally reasonable and in-character for both Clint and Vetinari to write about their dogs for six paragraphs, and I love them for it.
Fandoms: Discworld – Terry Pratchett, His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman, Marvel (Comics), Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch, Sherlock Holmes – Arthur Conan Doyle.
I really like the personal perspective you get from a diary or journal that you don't often get in the narrative. Even John Watson is editing his work for publication, not recording his private thoughts. What might he say in a journal that he wouldn't put in the newspaper? What does Drumknott say about the Oblong Office that you'd have to burn after reading?
I think what characters choose to record can be just as interesting as their thoughts. Does Kate Bishop note her archery scores every day? Which parties she's been invited to? Does Lyra note her progress through her university reading lists and what she thought of them? Does Molly keep a list of new recipes she wants to try, or ideas for what she's going to put on her blog?
Fandoms: Marvel (Comics), Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch.
As soon as I saw this it hit me that both Clint Barton and Peter Grant have the perfect chaotic energy for this prompt. But I can also imagine the list of things Natasha is never allowed to do again is endless (I only cut off one limb! He wasn't using it that much!), that Coulson and Fury pulled some crazy shit in the Rangers, and that Nightingale's posh school had to invent new rules after his pranks.
I love it when the rules build on each other: Not allowed to use time travel to fix my fuck-ups. "Not allowed to use time travel to fix other people's fuck-ups. Not allowed to use time travel to purposefully fuck things up." Etc. I quite enjoy the darker ones ("'Napalm sticks to kids' is not a motivational phrase") but also the ones that are just silly ("My proper military title is 'Specialist Schwarz' not 'Princess Anastasia'").
(The original Skippy's list, for inspiration.)
Fandoms: Discworld – Terry Pratchett, His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman, Harry Potter – JK Rowling, Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch.
I've requested these because I love mythology and prophecy, and I thought they'd both make for some interesting worldbuilding.
Fandoms: Discworld – Terry Pratchett, Harry Potter – JK Rowling, His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman, Marvel (Comics), Creator's Choice of Fandom.
I love big cities. I love small villages. I love far-flung destinations. I love places close to home. I will read literally anything about this.
I would love a page from a travel guide with maybe a little paragraph about the major sights, festivals, restaurants, bars, hotels, shopping, etc. Lots of Lonely Planet's travel guides also have little insets which describe famous people from the town, or the history of fortune telling in the city, or the meaning of the various street names. Those are always fun.
I also love listicles and other trashy online travel articles, and would love to see that done for fictional places. Something along the lines of:
Feel free to make up new locations; you don't have to stick to ones mentioned in canon.
In terms of serious travel writing, two of my favourites are Tiziano Terzani and Ryszard Kapuściński, and I also really enjoy Jan Morris, Peter Hessler, Rebecca Solnit… I'd be very happy to read something more akin to traditional travelogues if you want to go that route.
Fandoms: Discworld – Terry Pratchett, His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman, Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch, Sherlock Holmes – Arthur Conan Doyle.
These used to be really popular in the Harry Potter fandom and there's a whole tag to browse (20 Random Facts) if you're interested. But the premise is basically what it says on the tin. Give me all your random headcanons and little snippets of backstory for my faves, and you'll make me very happy.
Some random prompts if you need inspiration:
Fandoms: Discworld – Terry Pratchett, His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman, Marvel (Comics), Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch, Sherlock Holmes – Arthur Conan Doyle.
I used to have so much fun doing these as a kid! I'll happily play as one of the characters or an OC, and First, Second and Third Person POV are all fine.
Okay, clearly I am useless at prompts for this, I'm sorry. Write anything you enjoy and I promise I'll enjoy it too.
Fandoms: Discworld – Terry Pratchett, His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman, Marvel (Comics), Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch, Sherlock Holmes – Arthur Conan Doyle.
I love any story that messes with time and our perception of it, especially if the characters are also experiencing time differently. Have they been whacked on the head? Drugged? Hypnotised? Alien mind-whammied?
Fandoms: Discworld – Terry Pratchett, His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman, Marvel (Comics), Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch, Sherlock Holmes – Arthur Conan Doyle.
I've chosen some pretty restrictive forms here, so kudos to you if you tackle this. What I like best about poetry is how good it is for exploring more abstract themes: unrequited love, growing old, family relationships, of course, but also more quotidian things like the pleasure of seeing your garden in bloom, the weather, the importance of a good cup of tea.
Feel free to make one of the characters the author – does Nightingale write odes to the glorious sport of rugby? Does Holmes secretly pen love poems to Watson? – or not as you please.
Poetry can be such a personal thing that I feel weird writing prompts for this. Let me just assure you that I'll love anything and you should write with your heart.
Fandoms: Discworld – Terry Pratchett, His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman, Marvel (Comics), Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch.
This prompt is basically the love child of Multiple POV and Unreliable Narrator. I like the way the film gives its audience the chance try and piece together the truth from all the biased narratives.
Fandoms: Marvel (Comics)
Please explain Marvel to me. As I mentioned above, this is a sprawling fandom and I feel really out of my depth. I don't know if a primer for the whole canon is possible, given how huge it is. Please feel free to concentrate on the 'main' branch (if that exists) or just pick the fandom-popular bits or parts you're most interested in.

Sometimes I'm in the market for a new ship, but I don't know where to start, so a quiz that helped me choose would be brilliant. Multiple-fandom would be fun but single-fandom is also very welcome.

Once again, thank you for signing up to create something for me. I'm so excited to see what you come up with! \o/

Sherlock Holmes – Arthur Conan Doyle
Creators Choice of Fandom
Artwork/Doodles/Marginalia
Fandoms: Discworld – Terry Pratchett, His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman, Marvel (Comics), Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch, Sherlock Holmes – Arthur Conan Doyle.
I can imagine any of the characters I've nominated as a keen amateur artist, and I'd love to see what kind of things they note/sketch/save.
- Do they add corrections, explanations and arguments to everything they read?
- Do they doodle silly stick figures of people and animals in the margins while they're on the phone?
- Cheer up their to-do lists with flowers and hearts and dragons?
- Do characters write notes to each other and decorate them with little doodles of the things they're talking about?
- Do they sketch the people they work or live with, the places they spend their time, things they notice in the street?
- I have a soft spot for pictures where people are framed by their surroundings: two people standing together in a doorway, someone sitting framed by the window behind them, at the mouth of an alleyway, that kind of thing.
- Characters drawing hearts around their lover's name is always appreciated. ♥
Fake Trailer/Vid
Advice Column
Blind Item
Fandoms: Discworld – Terry Pratchett, Marvel (Comics), Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch, Sherlock Holmes – Arthur Conan Doyle.
I love blind items but 99% of the time I couldn't begin to guess which celebrities they're talking about. But fictional characters are a whole other matter! So who's being gossiped about?
- Who's having a scandalous affair?
- Who throws crazy sex parties, or is rumoured to?
- Who's had a massive falling-out and caused criminal damages?
- Who has just caused a diplomatic incident by trying to arrest someone? (Vimes and Peter are both equally capable.)
- Do the characters read their own blind items and laugh about them?
Dating App Profile
Diary/Journal Entry/Notes
Skippy's List/Increasingly Specific Rules
Folktale/Prophecies
Fandoms: Discworld – Terry Pratchett, His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman, Harry Potter – JK Rowling, Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch.
I've requested these because I love mythology and prophecy, and I thought they'd both make for some interesting worldbuilding.
- Are there any interesting tales or prophecies about the pantheon? ("Offler will appear to the righteous who go out in the rain in their underwear!")
- What would traditional English folklore like Green Men, brownies or the Wild Hunt look like in this world?
- How have real magical phenomena influenced folktales and urban legends?
- What famous prophecies from history were only understood after the fact?
- What about other countries? What kind of dark folktales emerged from Überwald or Muscovy?
- I'd be fascinated to see what kind of tales and prophecies non-human cultures like the Panserbjørn might have.
Travel Guide/Travel Writing
- 8 Must-Visit Bars in Madripoor
- 5 Biggest Festivals in Überwald
- Ultimate eats: the most delicious food in Diagon Alley
- The most incredible historic sites around Trollesund
- Dreaming spires: must-visit literary locations in (Lyra's) Oxford
- 6 Places That Commemorate the Glorious Revolution (Would there be that many? Probably it's just the Small Gods' Cemetery. Maybe that should be 6 Extremely Handsome Statues of Lord Vetinari Around Ankh-Morpork?)
20 Random Facts
Fandoms: Discworld – Terry Pratchett, His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman, Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch, Sherlock Holmes – Arthur Conan Doyle.
These used to be really popular in the Harry Potter fandom and there's a whole tag to browse (20 Random Facts) if you're interested. But the premise is basically what it says on the tin. Give me all your random headcanons and little snippets of backstory for my faves, and you'll make me very happy.
Some random prompts if you need inspiration:
- What were their childhoods like? (Or for Will and Lyra, what are they like as adults?)
- How did they get into the job/role they currently have?
- A time they did something illegal/got into trouble.
- A book they love (or hate).
- One of their happiest memories.
- A weird or unexpected talent.
- The hardest choice they've ever had to make.
Choose Your Own Adventure
Fandoms: Discworld – Terry Pratchett, His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman, Marvel (Comics), Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch, Sherlock Holmes – Arthur Conan Doyle.
I used to have so much fun doing these as a kid! I'll happily play as one of the characters or an OC, and First, Second and Third Person POV are all fine.
- Oh no, a political crisis has happened and now a character has to break out their diplomatic badassery.
- A murder has been committed and a character has to solve the crime without becoming a victim themselves.
- A character is exploring an unknown wilderness and has to decide which way to go.
- The characters can't decide where to go for dinner and need help.
- Bad guys are shooting at us! What do we do next?
- Organizing the rebellion is harder than it looks. What should we do first?
- Someone is loitering suspiciously over there. Do we investigate or not?
Okay, clearly I am useless at prompts for this, I'm sorry. Write anything you enjoy and I promise I'll enjoy it too.
Non-Linear Narrative
Fandoms: Discworld – Terry Pratchett, His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman, Marvel (Comics), Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch, Sherlock Holmes – Arthur Conan Doyle.
I love any story that messes with time and our perception of it, especially if the characters are also experiencing time differently. Have they been whacked on the head? Drugged? Hypnotised? Alien mind-whammied?
- Flashbacks are always fun! I like it when they show us more about the characters' thoughts and motivations, like when flashbacks to a bad breakup explain why two characters are being snippy with each other.
- I like stories that go back in time as we work out what happened to get to this point. Stuart: A Life Backwards does this really well ("What killed the child I was?"), and I also love the way BethH uses this in More Than You Know
- Maybe one character has amnesia and the story goes backwards or jumps around as they slowly recover their memories?
- Any form of Time Travel totally counts for this prompt, since no matter which order you tell it in it's going to be non-linear for someone.
Poetry (Ghazal, Rondeau, Sonnet, Villanelle)
Rashomon-style Conflicting Narratives
Fandoms: Discworld – Terry Pratchett, His Dark Materials – Philip Pullman, Marvel (Comics), Rivers of London – Ben Aaronovitch.
This prompt is basically the love child of Multiple POV and Unreliable Narrator. I like the way the film gives its audience the chance try and piece together the truth from all the biased narratives.
- Are the characters telling their story to someone? A courtroom trial or police interview?
- Is everyone trying to deflect from their own mistakes, or is it just a bunch of witnesses who remember things differently?
- Do the characters notice different things depending on their own biases?
- Are they lying about their own behaviour or trying to cover for people they care about?
- Maybe some of the narrators are embellishing their tales for attention?
- Does one of the characters work out the truth or are we left guessing?
Fandom Primer
Fandoms: Marvel (Comics)
Please explain Marvel to me. As I mentioned above, this is a sprawling fandom and I feel really out of my depth. I don't know if a primer for the whole canon is possible, given how huge it is. Please feel free to concentrate on the 'main' branch (if that exists) or just pick the fandom-popular bits or parts you're most interested in.
- Who are the main characters/biggest ships?
- What do you consider the must-read storylines?
- Which were the biggest/most/famous/most award-winning/whatever issues?
- Why are there so many different versions of Earth and why are they numbered?
- Any major controversies I shouldn't bring up on the internet unless I want to start wank?
Quiz (Which Ship Should You Check Out?)
Fandoms: Creator's Choice of Fandom
Sometimes I'm in the market for a new ship, but I don't know where to start, so a quiz that helped me choose would be brilliant. Multiple-fandom would be fun but single-fandom is also very welcome.
Include any questions you'd like, but here are some random suggestions if you're stuck for inspiration:
- Friends-to-Lovers or Enemies-to-Lovers?
- Made For Each Other or Opposites Attract?
- Healthy Relationships or Co-Dependent?
- Fluff or Angst?
- First Time or Getting Back Together?
- Favourite tropes?
Once again, thank you for signing up to create something for me. I'm so excited to see what you come up with! \o/
